PTE General mock test — frequently asked questions

PTE General (also known as London Tests of English) is a general English qualification developed by Pearson. Unlike PTE Academic (which is a proficiency test for migration/university), PTE General is a skills-based qualification at CEFR levels A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2. It tests everyday English rather than academic English.

No — PTE General is not accepted by the Australian Department of Home Affairs for skilled migration points. For Australian PR, you need PTE Academic (not PTE General). The two are completely separate examinations.

PTE General is suited to students and professionals who want a recognised English language qualification for employment, general study or personal achievement. It is not required for Australian immigration but is sometimes requested by employers or vocational education providers.

PTE Academic is a high-stakes proficiency test used for university admission and skilled migration (189, 190, 491 visas). PTE General is a general English skills qualification at different CEFR levels. They are made by the same company (Pearson) but are entirely different examinations with different purposes, formats and scoring.

There is some overlap in skills (grammar, vocabulary, listening comprehension) but the task formats are quite different. Most students aiming for Australian PR should focus exclusively on PTE Academic — it is the relevant test for migration purposes.
