How scoring works

The PTE Academic AI scoring system — explained.

PTE Academic uses advanced artificial intelligence and machine learning to evaluate your responses across all four skill areas. This eliminates examiner subjectivity and ensures every test-taker is assessed against exactly the same objective standards.

🎙️
Speech Recognition & Fluency

For speaking tasks, AI analyses pronunciation, intonation, rhythm and oral vocabulary to produce a detailed assessment of your spoken English.

📝
Grammar & Vocabulary

In writing tasks, AI evaluates grammatical accuracy, sentence coherence, logical organisation and the range of lexical resources used.

🎯
Content & Relevance

The system measures how accurately and completely your responses address task requirements — minor errors that don't affect communication are not penalised.

📊
CEFR Alignment

PTE Academic scores are mapped to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), the international standard for describing language proficiency.

Speed & Transparency

AI-powered scoring delivers results typically within 48 hours, with most test-takers receiving their score report within five business days.

⚙️
Human Expert Oversight

Human experts train and refine the AI system. For Describe Image and Re-tell Lecture, human reviewers confirm content accuracy before scores are finalised.

Your score report

What's on your PTE Academic score card.

Your PTE Academic score report is a standardised document that includes all information required for university admissions, professional registrations and visa applications.

1
Overall Score (10 to 90)

Your overall PTE Academic score is a single number on a scale of 10 to 90. It represents your general English language proficiency and is the figure most commonly cited in university admissions and visa applications.

2
Communicative Skills Scores

Individual scores for Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing. Each reflects your performance on all tasks within that skill area, including tasks that assess multiple skills simultaneously.

3
Enabling Skills Breakdown

Grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, oral fluency, spelling and written discourse scores — providing detailed insight into your language strengths and development areas.

4
Score Report Code (SRC)

Every score report contains a unique Score Report Code. Institutions use this code through Pearson's secure electronic verification system to confirm the authenticity of your results. Printed copies are not accepted.

5
SELT URN Number (PTE Academic UKVI only)

If you took PTE Academic UKVI for a UK Visa application, your report includes a SELT Unique Reference Number. This is entered on your UK visa application form so the UK Home Office can verify your results directly.

Communicative skills

The 4 communicative skill scores — what each measures.

✏️ Writing
  • Assessed through Summarize Written Text and Write Essay
  • Evaluates grammar, vocabulary range, logical organisation and coherence
  • Off-topic or under-length responses score zero for Content criterion
📖 Reading
  • Assessed through Multiple Choice, Re-order Paragraphs and Fill in the Blanks tasks
  • Tests ability to understand written academic and professional content
  • Some reading tasks also contribute to your Writing score simultaneously
🎧 Listening
  • Assessed through Summarize Spoken Text, Multiple Choice, Fill in the Blanks, Write from Dictation
  • Measures accuracy in understanding and interpreting spoken English
  • Some tasks also contribute to Reading or Writing scores
Enabling skills

The 8 enabling skills — the foundation behind your PTE score.

Enabling skills work beneath the surface and directly influence your communicative skill scores. They appear on your score report and are key for targeted preparation.

Content
Speaking · Writing

Measures how directly and completely your response addresses the task prompt. Off-topic, incomplete or AI-generated/memorised template responses receive lower content scores.

Oral Fluency
Speaking

Evaluates natural flow and rhythm of your spoken English. Smooth, uninterrupted speech scores well. Hesitations, unnatural pauses, repetitions or choppy delivery lower this score.

Pronunciation
Speaking

Assesses clarity and intelligibility of your speech. Should align with standard English phonemes and allow listeners to understand without difficulty. Heavy accents or consistent mispronunciations reduce this score.

Form
Speaking · Writing

Whether your response meets structural requirements — word count ranges for writing, appropriate length for speaking. Responses too short, too long or structurally incomplete lose Form marks.

Grammar
Writing

Accuracy and variety of grammatical structures. Correct sentence construction, verb tenses, subject-verb agreement and punctuation. Higher scores reward conditionals, passive voice and complex sentence types.

Vocabulary
Speaking · Writing

Range, precision and appropriateness of word choices. Using varied, contextually accurate vocabulary boosts this score. Repeating simple words or misusing terms reduces the score even if other aspects are strong.

Spelling
Writing

Ensures written responses follow standard spelling conventions. Both British and American English accepted but you must be consistent. Frequent errors reduce this score even if content is otherwise sound.

Development, Structure & Coherence
Writing

Logical organisation and development of ideas. Clear introduction, structured body paragraphs and conclusion. Ideas must connect logically using linking words: "therefore", "however", "in contrast".

💡 Multiplier effect: Improving your enabling skills has a multiplier effect on your overall PTE score. Strengthening oral fluency and pronunciation simultaneously improves your Speaking score. Improving grammar and vocabulary boosts Writing. Targeted practice in these areas delivers more significant score gains than broad, unfocused preparation.
Integrated scoring

Tasks that contribute to multiple skill scores simultaneously.

Several PTE tasks contribute to more than one communicative skill score. Performing well on these gives your overall score a greater boost.

🎧
Repeat Sentence

Contributes to Speaking + Listening. You must listen carefully to reproduce a sentence accurately while demonstrating comprehension and spoken delivery simultaneously.

📖
Reading & Writing: Fill in the Blanks

Contributes to Reading + Writing. Tests grammatical and vocabulary knowledge within a reading context.

✏️
Summarize Spoken Text

Contributes to Listening + Writing. You must understand a spoken audio clip and then produce an accurate written summary.

⌨️
Write from Dictation

Contributes to Listening + Writing. You must listen to a spoken sentence and type it exactly, testing both auditory comprehension and written accuracy.

Score validity

PTE Academic scores are valid for 2 years from the test date.

2 years
Valid from test date

PTE Academic scores are valid for exactly two years from the date you sat the test. This applies to university admissions, professional registration, skilled migration and visa applications.

Expired
After 2 years — scores are invalid

Once two years pass, scores are automatically considered invalid. For long-term plans like PR applications, the immigration process can extend over many months — plan accordingly so your scores remain valid at decision time.

Results timeline: PTE Academic results are typically delivered within 48 hours. You receive an email notification when your score report is ready to download from the myPTE portal. If five working days have passed without notification, check your spam folder before contacting PTE support.

Your PTE Academic score is valid for two years from the date you took the test. After this period, the scores are considered expired and cannot be used for university applications, visa applications or professional registration. You will need to retake the test to provide a new valid score report. For long-term plans like PR applications, ensure your scores will remain valid at the time a decision is made on your application.

PTE Academic uses a scoring scale from 10 to 90. Overall scores and individual communicative skill scores all fall within this range. No. Institutions must verify PTE Academic scores electronically through Pearson's official verification platform using the Score Report Code (SRC) found on your report. Always share your SRC or send scores electronically through the myPTE portal.

Your overall PTE Academic score is a single composite number on the 10–90 scale representing your general English proficiency. Your communicative skill scores are separate scores for each of the four tested areas: Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening. Many institutions and immigration programs specify minimum requirements for both the overall score AND individual skill scores — for example, AHPRA requires 7.0 (65) in every section for nursing registration. Always review both when checking your eligibility.

First, check your spam or junk email folder for the notification email. If the email is not there and it has been more than five working days since your test date, contact PTE customer support directly for assistance. Do not rebook a test before confirming with support — rescoring cannot be requested after a new test has been booked.
