What is IELTS?

IELTS โ€” the world's most accepted English test for migration and study.

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is administered by IDP and the British Council. It is accepted by over 11,000 organisations globally including universities, professional registration bodies and immigration authorities in Australia, Canada, the UK, New Zealand and the USA. IELTS tests 4 English skills and issues a Band score from 1 to 9, with 9 being native-level proficiency. Most Australian skilled migration visa requirements specify a minimum band of 6.0โ€“7.0 depending on the visa subclass and occupation. This guide is designed to support your IELTS preparation with expert tips and proven strategies.

Skill-by-skill preparation guide

Complete guide to all 4 IELTS skills for successful IELTS preparation.

Exam Format
IELTS Listening โ€” 40 questions, 30 minutes

4 sections with increasing difficulty. Audio plays ONCE โ€” no replay. 10 minutes at the end to transfer answers to answer sheet (paper-based test only).

  • Section 1: Conversation โ€” everyday social context (booking, enquiry)
  • Section 2: Monologue โ€” everyday social context (tour, announcement)
  • Section 3: Conversation โ€” academic context (students, tutors)
  • Section 4: Monologue โ€” academic lecture or talk
Question Types
10 Listening question formats to master
  • Multiple choice (single and multiple answer)
  • Form, note, table and sentence completion
  • Summary completion
  • Diagram and flow-chart labelling
  • Map and plan labelling
  • Matching and classification
Scoring
Band score conversion โ€” raw scores

Every correct answer = 1 mark (40 total). No penalty for wrong answers.

39โ€“40 = Band 9 35โ€“38 = Band 8 30โ€“34 = Band 7 23โ€“29 = Band 6
Top Strategy
Read questions before audio plays โ€” always

The 30โ€“60 seconds you have to look at each section before audio starts is gold. Use it to identify keywords in each question and predict the type of answer needed (number, name, date, adjective). This shifts you from passive listening to targeted listening.

High-Impact Tip
Distractors are intentional โ€” expect wrong answers first

IELTS Listening is designed to test whether you can follow a conversation as information changes. Speakers frequently mention something that sounds right and then correct or change it. Do not mark the first answer you hear โ€” wait for the speaker to confirm or conclude the point.

Spelling matters
Spelling errors on completion tasks = zero marks

Sentence, table and note completion questions require exact spelling. A correctly heard answer with incorrect spelling scores zero. Practice writing high-frequency words quickly and accurately. Review the IELTS Academic Wordlist for common problem words as part of your IELTS preparation online routine.

Section 4 strategy
Predict content and structure from question context

Section 4 is a continuous monologue (lecture) โ€” the hardest section. Before it starts, read all questions and identify the lecture's likely structure (introduction โ€” 3 main points โ€” conclusion). This mental map helps you stay oriented even if you miss a word or two.

Struggling with Listening accuracy?

Our coaches diagnose whether you are losing marks on distractors, spelling, or simply missing the audio and fix the exact cause with targeted exercises to improve your IELTS preparation.

IELTS Reading โ€” 40 questions, 60 minutes

3 reading passages with 40 questions total. Academic Reading uses complex academic texts from journals, books and magazines. General Training uses notices, advertisements, workplace documents and shorter texts.

  • Academic Passage 1: Descriptive or factual text โ€” medium difficulty
  • Academic Passage 2: Analytical or discursive โ€” harder
  • Academic Passage 3: Complex argument/discussion โ€” hardest
Question Types
Reading question formats
  • True/False/Not Given and Yes/No/Not Given
  • Multiple choice (single and multi-answer)
  • Matching headings to paragraphs
  • Matching information (location in text)
  • Matching features / sentence endings
  • Summary, sentence and note completion
  • Diagram labelling
  • Short answer questions
Scoring
Raw score to band conversion
39โ€“40 = Band 9 35โ€“38 = Band 8 30โ€“34 = Band 7 23โ€“29 = Band 6

Academic Reading is generally scored on a stricter curve than General Training โ€” getting 35 correct may give Band 8 in General but only Band 7.5 in Academic.

Key Distinction
True/False/NG vs Yes/No/NG โ€” different rules

True/False/Not Given tests factual information from the text. Yes/No/Not Given tests the writer's opinion or views. "Not Given" means the information is simply absent โ€” not that it's wrong. This distinction trips up many candidates. Practice each type separately until the difference is automatic.

Time Management
20 minutes per passage โ€” strict

Reading has no audio to pace you โ€” time management is entirely your responsibility. Set a timer for 20 minutes per passage. If you're stuck on a question after 1 minute, move on and return at the end. The hardest question is worth the same 1 mark as the easiest.

Matching Headings
Read the first 2 sentences of each paragraph first

For Matching Headings tasks, the main idea of a paragraph is almost always stated in the first 1โ€“2 sentences. Don't read the full paragraph โ€” identify the topic sentence, then match it to a heading. Work from the headings, not from the paragraphs, to save time.

Advanced Strategy
Use the questions as a reading guide

Read the questions for a passage before reading the text. Questions reveal what information is important and where in the text to look for it. This targeted approach is far more efficient than reading everything and then answering โ€” especially for Band 7+ time requirements.

Task 1 โ€” Academic
Describe a visual โ€” graph, chart, table or diagram
  • Minimum 150 words โ€” aim for 170โ€“190
  • Describe what you see โ€” DO NOT give opinions
  • Include an overview paragraph (most important)
  • Highlight key trends, comparisons and extremes
  • No personal pronouns (no "I think", "In my opinion")
  • Use precise data โ€” don't generalise without numbers
Task 1 โ€” General Training
Write a formal, semi-formal or informal letter
  • Minimum 150 words โ€” aim for 175โ€“200
  • Match register to the task (formal if writing to a company)
  • Address all 3 bullet points in the task prompt
  • Use correct opening and closing phrases
  • Structure: opening โ€” purpose โ€” 3 bullet points โ€” closing
Task 2 โ€” Both Academic & General
Write an essay responding to an opinion, argument or problem
  • Minimum 250 words โ€” aim for 270โ€“290
  • 4-paragraph structure: Introduction โ€” Body 1 โ€” Body 2 โ€” Conclusion
  • State your position clearly in the introduction
  • Each body paragraph: topic sentence + explanation + example
  • Use cohesion markers (However, Furthermore, Consequently)
  • Avoid contractions (don't โ†’ do not)

Task 2 Essay Template โ€” Agree/Disagree
Introduction: Rephrase the statement in your own words. State your position clearly: "This essay [agrees/disagrees] with this viewpoint because [brief reasons]."
Body Paragraph 1: Topic sentence โ€” Explanation of your point โ€” Specific example from real life, research or experience โ€” Link back to question.
Body Paragraph 2: Second supporting point โ€” Explanation โ€” Counter-argument acknowledged โ€” Rebuttal โ€” Example.
Conclusion: In conclusion, while [acknowledge other view], it is clear that [restate your position] because [brief summary of reasons].
Task 2 Essay Template โ€” Band 7+
4-paragraph structure that works every time

See the template block below. Master the structure, then adapt your vocabulary and examples for each specific question type.

Task 1 Academic โ€” Overview Tip
The overview paragraph = the most important paragraph

The overview paragraph (typically paragraph 2, immediately after the introduction) states the most significant trends or comparisons in the data without using specific numbers. This is what examiners look for first for Task Achievement โ€” missing it is the fastest way to drop from Band 7 to Band 6.

Exam Format
IELTS Speaking โ€” 3 parts, 11โ€“14 minutes
  • Part 1 (4โ€“5 min): Introduction and interview. Examiner asks about familiar topics โ€” home, family, work, hobbies, daily routines.
  • Part 2 (3โ€“4 min): Individual long turn. You receive a cue card with a topic and 3โ€“4 bullet points. 1 minute to prepare, then speak for 1โ€“2 minutes.
  • Part 3 (4โ€“5 min): Two-way discussion. Examiner asks more abstract discussion questions related to the Part 2 topic.
4 Assessment Criteria
How Speaking is marked
  • Fluency & Coherence: Natural flow, ideas linked logically, minimal hesitation
  • Lexical Resource: Vocabulary range, precision, awareness of collocation
  • Grammatical Range & Accuracy: Variety of structures, frequency of errors
  • Pronunciation: Intelligibility, natural stress and intonation patterns
Common Speaking Mistakes
What pulls Band 6 students to 5.5
MistakeImpact
โœ— Using "umm, err, like" as fillers Fluency criterion โ€” reduces score
โœ— Memorising scripted answers Examiner detects and penalises it
โœ— One-word or very short answers in Part 1 Limits vocabulary and grammar demonstration
โœ— Using simple vocabulary repeatedly Lexical Resource stays at Band 6
Part 2 Strategy โ€” Cue Card
Use the 1 minute of preparation strategically

Don't try to write your whole answer โ€” you won't have time. Instead: (1) Identify the main topic; (2) Note 3 bullet points using abbreviations; (3) Think of a relevant personal example or story; (4) Decide your opening sentence. Speaking from a brief structured outline is more natural and impressive than trying to memorise a script.

Fluency Tip
Replace silence fillers with thinking phrases

Replace "umm..." and "err..." with natural English thinking phrases: "That's an interesting question..." ยท "Let me think about that for a moment..." ยท "I've never really thought about that, but I suppose..." These phrases buy you 2โ€“3 seconds of thinking time without damaging your Fluency score.

Part 1 Technique
Every answer needs 2โ€“3 sentences minimum

For Part 1 questions ("Do you like cooking?"), never give one-word answers. Structure every answer as: Direct answer โ€” Reason โ€” Example or elaboration. "Yes, I do, particularly because cooking allows me to be creative. I especially enjoy experimenting with Asian cuisine on weekends." This naturally demonstrates vocabulary range and grammatical variety.

Part 3 Strategy
Give developed opinions โ€” not just yes/no

Part 3 questions require more abstract and analytical thinking ("How has technology changed the way people socialise?"). Structure answers as: Opinion โ€” Reason โ€” Counter-point โ€” Example or evidence โ€” Restate opinion. This 5-part structure naturally achieves Band 7+ Coherence scores and gives you time to demonstrate a wide range of vocabulary and grammar.

What to avoid

10 most common IELTS preparation mistakes โ€” and how to fix them.

#Common MistakeThe ProblemThe Fix
1 Focusing only on grammar and vocabulary Writing/Speaking marked on 4 criteria โ€” grammar is only 25% of the score Balance Task Achievement, Coherence and Lexical Resource equally
2 Not practising full timed mock tests IELTS is 2h 45min of sustained concentration โ€” stamina is a skill Take at least 2 full mock tests before exam day
3 Submitting under 250 words for Task 2 Automatic band cap โ€” you cannot score Band 7 with under 250 words Aim for 270โ€“280 words consistently. Always count before submitting.
4 Memorising essay templates word-for-word Examiners recognise memorised phrases and penalise them Learn the structure, not the specific sentences. Adapt to each task.
5 Neglecting the overview in Task 1 Academic Missing overview = Task Achievement cannot score above Band 5 Always write 2 overview sentences covering the main trends
6 Speaking too fast to fill silence Speed without clarity reduces both Fluency and Pronunciation scores Speak at a natural, confident pace โ€” use thinking phrases to buy time
7 Reading the full passage before answering 60 minutes is not enough time to read 3 passages + 40 questions fully Read questions first, then skim/scan specifically for answers
8 Guessing True/False/NG without locating text Guessing without finding the exact sentence leads to consistent errors Always locate the specific sentence in the text before answering T/F/NG
9 Not transferring answers during transfer time Only applicable to paper IELTS โ€” losing 10 min transfer time wastes marks Write answers directly on answer sheet during the test, not just at the end
10 Studying alone without expert Writing/Speaking feedback Self-assessment is inaccurate โ€” you cannot see your own Band-limiting errors Get at least 3 essays and 2 Speaking sessions reviewed by a certified trainer

FAQ

About IELTS preparation.

IELTS Academic is required for university admission and professional registration (nursing, medicine, teaching, engineering, AHPRA). The Reading passages are complex academic texts; Task 1 requires describing a graph or chart. IELTS General Training is for skilled migration (PR immigration points), work visas and secondary education. The Reading section includes notices and workplace documents; Task 1 requires writing a formal, semi-formal or informal letter. The Listening and Speaking sections are identical for both versions, so your IELTS preparation should focus on the correct test format.
Preparation time depends on your starting level and target band. Students starting from Band 5 and targeting Band 6.5 typically need 4โ€“6 weeks of structured preparation. Targeting Band 7.0 from Band 5.5โ€“6.0 typically takes 6โ€“8 weeks. Targeting Band 8.0 from Band 6.5 may require 8โ€“12 weeks of intensive coaching.
Yes โ€” this is one of the most common improvements our students make. Band 6 Writing typically has specific, identifiable patterns: incomplete task achievement, limited vocabulary range, overuse of simple sentences, basic cohesion. When these patterns are identified through certified 1:1 feedback and corrected systematically over 4 weeks, moving from Band 6 to Band 7 in Writing is achievable for most students with regular practice.
We recommend at least 3 full mock tests โ€” one at the start of preparation (diagnostic), one at the midpoint (track progress), and one 3โ€“5 days before your exam (final readiness check). The final mock test should be taken under full exam conditions: strict timing, no interruptions, no breaks between sections.
Self-preparation works well for students targeting Band 6.0โ€“6.5 who have strong English foundations. For Band 7.0+ โ€” especially for professional registration or immigration points โ€” we strongly recommend expert coaching. Writing and Speaking have no objective right answer: you need a certified Band 7+ trainer to identify why your responses aren't at the band you're targeting.
The overall IELTS band score is the average of your 4 section scores (Listening + Reading + Writing + Speaking), rounded to the nearest 0.5. For example: 7.0 + 7.0 + 6.5 + 6.5 = 27 รท 4 = 6.75, which rounds to 7.0. Some visa and professional body requirements specify minimum scores in individual sections โ€” in these cases, all 4 sections must individually meet the minimum, not just the overall average.
